Welcome

Calabash Street Elementary School opened its doors in September of 1959, just after Alaska and Hawaii were admitted as states to the union. It is the smallest elementary school in the San Fernando Valley, with a total population of approximately 320 students. Calabash Street Elementary School was honored as a California Distinguished School in 2006. Calabash is the Indian name for gourd, and was named for the surrounding pumpkin fields in the area. The school population has fluctuated over the years from a high of over 1,000 to a low of 250.

Calabash claims a diverse student population, with a total of 11 different first languages spoken in the home including Farsi, Spanish, Italian, Tagali and more. Calabash has an ethnically diverse population with approximately 3% Asian, 8% Black/Non Hispanic, 10% Hispanic and 75% Caucasian. Calabash enjoys an extremely stable faculty and staff. Seventeen teachers and 14 aides possess a combined 275 years of teaching experience with an average tenure at the school of 10 years. The parent population plays an active role in our school community volunteering in a multitude of areas around the school.
